For the ten years prior to his retirement in 2008 Don Lowes was the Senior Principal Surveyor and Head of Classification for Lloyd's Register at their head office in London.

Don Lowes is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow Member of the Institute of Marine Engineers. Following seven years as a Marine Engineer Officer and Superintendent in the Merchant Navy, Don Lowes spent thirty three years as a ship and engine surveyor covering classification, statutory surveys for new construction, existing ships and yachts, including offshore and industrial surveys in six different countries‎.
